Diagnosis

Knowing what problems to mitigate and what to prepare for

As humanitarians, we have solid intuition about our contexts of operation. But there are also problems that are often confused together, and it can be difficult to pick up on some of the nuances between them.

We just need to be able to confirm what problems we already have and should mitigate, as well as what problems we are likely to have in the future and should prepare for!

Use the diagnostic tool to determine which problems you have today or you may have tomorrow

What is the diagnostic?

The diagnostic tool is a set of questions that seeks to clarify what your intuition is about the problems that you have, whether you are looking at the right signs, what is the validity of the information that you are using, etc.

Running the diagnostic doesn't require you to have any specific access to technical information. Just select what applies best and answer to the best of your current ability.

This should take approximately 30mn.

How does this work?

The diagnostic tool can be used individually by a NEXT champion or together as a team. We recommend that the process is led by one person in the team that feels comfortable with the contents in NEXT. Can be someone from support team such as Head of Support. Can also be someone from program team with some level of technical financial background such as the Cash & Markets advisor.

Ideally, a diagnostic would be run annually on a regular basis, for example in July in preparation for the strategic revision period. The results would serve to inform the update of the risk registry as well as preparedness and readiness measures. The diagnostic can also be run ad hoc at any point in time when the economic situations seems to significantly deteriorate.

The person who runs the diagnostic is in charge of sharing the results with the entire team as well as of organizing a follow-up team discussion to look at the recommendations and dive into action planning.
